Ads in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and ChatGPT: How Local Businesses Show Up in AI Search in 2026

There are two ways for a local business to appear inside an AI answer in 2026. The paid way: Google places labeled ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode from eligible Google Ads campaigns, and ChatGPT shows sponsored units to free-tier users. The organic way: the AI names or cites you because your business facts, reviews, and pages answer the question better than anyone else's. You want both, and they work differently.
I get this question weekly now, usually phrased as "how do I get into the AI thing at the top of Google?" The honest answer is that the ad slot and the recommendation are two separate pieces of real estate. You can buy one. You have to earn the other. Here is how each works and what I would do this quarter if I ran a local service business.
Can you buy ads inside Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Yes. Google announced ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode at Marketing Live in May 2025 and has expanded them since, including additional English-language markets in late 2025. The ads are labeled "Sponsored" and appear within or alongside the AI response when Google judges them relevant to the query. There is no separate "AI Overview ad" product to buy. They come out of the Google Ads account you already have.
What matters is which campaigns are eligible. Per Google's guidance, ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode can be served from Search campaigns using AI Max or broad match, from Shopping campaigns, and from Performance Max. A Search campaign built entirely on exact and phrase match keywords, without AI Max, is generally not eligible. That is the trade: to get into AI surfaces, you give Google more freedom to decide which searches match your ad.
The September 2026 AI Max upgrade
AI Max for Search reached general availability in 2026, and Google announced that Search campaigns using automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad match setting would be upgraded to AI Max starting September 1, 2026. Campaigns with automatically created assets get search term matching and text customization turned on by default. If you have not logged into your account since summer, check it now. Your ads may be matching to searches, and showing text, you never wrote.
Local Services Ads are moving too
Google is folding Local Services Ads into Google Ads as a pay-per-lead version of Performance Max, starting with select US advertisers in August 2026 and expanding through 2027. The ads stay on Search and Maps and still charge per lead, not per click. For a home service business, this means the pay-per-lead campaign you run today will live in the same account as your AI-surface-eligible campaigns, with the same reporting.
What about ads in ChatGPT and other assistants?
OpenAI announced ads in January 2026 and began showing them on February 9, 2026, to logged-in adult users in the US on the Free and Go tiers. Paid tiers such as Plus and Pro do not see ads. OpenAI has said ads are clearly labeled, separated from the answer, and do not influence what ChatGPT recommends. In May 2026, OpenAI opened a self-serve Ads Manager beta for US advertisers, with access rolling out gradually after verification.
For most local service businesses, ChatGPT ads are worth watching, not rushing into. Early reporting describes targeting based on conversation context rather than keywords, and local targeting and measurement tools are still maturing. If you already have strong search campaigns and clean conversion tracking, a small test is reasonable. If you do not, fix those first.
| Surface | Paid path | Organic path | My take for local service businesses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Labeled ads from Search (AI Max or broad match), Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns | Being cited as a source or named in the answer | Highest priority. Most local searches still start on Google. |
| Google AI Mode | Same eligible campaign types as AI Overviews | Named in conversational answers; Business Profile data, reviews, and site content feed it | Growing fast. Treat it as an extension of Google search. |
| Google Maps and local results | Local Services Ads (moving into Google Ads as pay-per-lead Performance Max), local search ads | Business Profile, proximity, reviews, relevance | Still where many service calls start. Do not neglect it. |
| ChatGPT | Sponsored units for US Free and Go users; self-serve beta since May 2026 | Named in answers when your facts are consistent across sources | Test small once Google is dialed in. Organic matters more today. |
| Perplexity, Claude, Gemini app | Limited or no local ad products for small advertisers | Cited from the web and business listings | Organic only for now. Same playbook as above. |
How do you get named in the AI answer itself?
This is the part you cannot buy. When someone asks "who is a good HVAC company in Loveland that does same-day repairs," the AI builds its answer from search results, business listings, reviews, and pages that directly answer the question. Paying for an ad gets you a labeled slot near that answer. It does not get you into the sentence that says "two well-reviewed options are..."
- Make your business facts agree everywhere: name, phone, service area, hours, and services should match on your website, Business Profile, and major directories. AI systems cross-check, and disagreement reads as doubt.
- Write service pages that answer the exact question in the first two sentences, including price ranges where you can give them.
- Keep reviews coming steadily, and reply to them. Recency and specifics matter more than a big number from three years ago.
- Add structured data that matches what is visible on the page: LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage where it fits. Our schema markup guide covers the basics.
- Publish the details AI assistants are asked about: service area towns, emergency availability, financing, warranties, and licensing.
We wrote the full organic playbook in AEO for local service businesses, and the broader shift is covered in AI search is replacing Google: what to do. The short version: the businesses AI recommends are the ones it can verify.
Should a local business turn on AI Max to get into AI Overviews?
Usually yes, with guardrails. The reason to say yes is reach: AI Overviews and AI Mode are where a growing share of service searches end up, and exact-match-only campaigns cannot follow them there. The reason for guardrails is that AI Max decides which searches match and can rewrite your ad text, and a local business has less budget to absorb mistakes than a national retailer.
- Feed it real conversions. Import booked jobs or qualified leads from your CRM, not just form submissions. AI matching optimizes toward whatever you tell it is a win.
- Review search terms weekly for the first month, then every two weeks. Add negatives for jobs you do not do and towns you do not serve.
- Lock down what must not change. Use brand guidelines and exclusions so the system does not write claims about prices, warranties, or licensing that you never made.
- Control final URL expansion. Send traffic to pages built to convert, not to your careers page or an old blog post.
- Run it as a test against your existing campaign for four to six weeks before moving the whole budget.
We cover how to set those guardrails in more detail in our post on AI-generated ad creative and automated campaigns.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks for local businesses?
For informational searches, multiple studies have found fewer clicks to websites when an AI Overview appears. For "I need someone now" searches, the effect is less clear, because the person still has to call or book somebody. That changes where you should invest. The click you do get is worth more, so the page it lands on has to load fast, answer the question, show proof, and make calling or booking obvious. And the phone has to get answered. An AI assistant that recommends you is wasted if the call rolls to voicemail.
You can rent the ad slot next to the AI answer. You have to earn the sentence inside it. Do both, and make sure the phone gets answered when either one works.
What I would do this quarter
- Log into Google Ads and check whether any Search campaign was upgraded to AI Max in September. Review search terms and auto-generated text.
- Set up offline conversion import from your CRM so automated bidding learns from booked jobs.
- Audit your business facts across your website, Business Profile, and top directories, and fix every mismatch.
- Rewrite your top three service pages to answer the main question in the first paragraph, with honest price ranges.
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity who they recommend for your service in your town. Write down who they name and why.
If you want help with either side, we handle ad management and the website and CRM work that makes AI recommendations stick. Book a call with me and we will run that AI audit on your business live.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to appear in Google AI Overviews?
You can pay for a labeled ad that appears in or near AI Overviews and AI Mode, using Search campaigns with AI Max or broad match, Shopping, or Performance Max. You cannot pay to be named inside the AI-written answer itself. That depends on consistent business facts, reviews, and pages that answer the question directly.
Which Google Ads campaigns can show in AI Mode?
Per Google, Search campaigns using AI Max or broad match, Shopping campaigns, and Performance Max are eligible to show ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Search campaigns using only exact and phrase match without AI Max generally are not. Google began upgrading many Search campaigns to AI Max automatically on September 1, 2026.
Does ChatGPT show ads for local businesses?
ChatGPT has shown ads to logged-in US adults on its Free and Go tiers since February 2026, and OpenAI opened a self-serve Ads Manager beta in May 2026. OpenAI says ads are labeled and do not influence answers. Local targeting tools are still maturing, so most local businesses should test small after their Google campaigns are solid.
Do I need to change my SEO for AI Overviews?
Mostly you need to do the fundamentals better. Make business facts consistent everywhere, answer the main question in the first lines of each service page, add matching structured data, and keep reviews current. AI Overviews draw on search results and listings, so strong local SEO is still the foundation.
Is AI Max safe for a small local business?
It can be, with guardrails. Import real booked-job conversions, review search terms weekly at first, add negative keywords for services and areas you do not cover, control which landing pages it can use, and test against your existing campaign for four to six weeks before shifting the full budget.
